The Big Data initiative involves mainstream IT players committed to creating new value using emerging open source technologies.
Rome (Italy) and Paris (France), 6th May 2014 – Engineering Group – the leading Italian software and services company – and OW2 – one of the top-4 global open source organizations – announce the OW2 Big Data initiative, focused on the new generation of technologies and software designed to extract value from large volumes of heterogeneous data.
The initiative offers a vibrant ecosystem that brings together mainstream IT players, who cooperate to deliver a complete open source technology stack addressing the emerging Business Intelligence and Big Data trends. OW2 hosts the platform that will integrate the results coming from collaborative research and development projects.
It offers a new landscape leading to innovation and competitive advantage in the Business Intelligence and Big Data domains. Led by Engineering Group, the initiative includes the following participants: Altic, Artemis, Linagora, Talend and the University of Milan. Moreover, it exploits OW2 open source code base provided by various open source projects, including SpagoBI suite, Talend Open Studio and OBM.org.
The initiative faces new challenges and opportunities brought by the digital economy of the future. By adopting actual business scenarios, it intends to define new methods for effective exploration of Big Data, also applying data science techniques. Last but not least, it encourages the pervasive adoption of Open Data practices and standards, in order to increase the value of information owned by organizations and enterprises.
“This initiative reflects the collaborative approach of each partner, where anyone contributes their own competence, experience and effort, and share cooperation opportunities” says Grazia Cazzin, leader of the Big Data initiative. “The focus on Value that can be generated thanks to Big Data is a clear and shared asset, which extends and steers our technological competence“.
“Big Data is a defining technology in today’s computing. We are proud to support the Big Data initiative, which illustrates how our open source community aligns with key market trends” says Cédric Thomas, OW2 CEO. “This is an open initiative and we are looking forward to welcoming new participants” he adds.
